Now that the summer months are upon us and we are having beautiful sunny weather, more people are spending time outdoors. The sun is a great source of Vitamin D, but too much time under that blazing heat and you could end up with nasty sunburn.
Applying sunscreen is very important to prevent sunburns and, in the long run, prevent skin cancer. Sunscreen should be reapplied throughout the day if you are spending more than an hour outside. It should also be applied thirty minutes before going outside.
Sunburns, like any burn, create inflammation and, along with being extremely painful, are a local contraindication for massage. This means that if you have a sunburn, a massage therapist is not allowed to massage you. Most people probably would not want a massage due to the pain, but on occasion clients may briefly forget about being a little toasted and still ask for massage over the inflamed area.
If you are red with a burn, re-book your appointment or get the therapist to work on a different area for that treatment. The next time you go outside in the summer for more than fifteen minutes, apply some sunscreen. Your skin will thank you!
